Together with German-American painter Lyonel Feininger and German sculptor Gerhard Marcks, under the direction of German architect Walter Gropius, Itten was part of the core of the Weimar Bauhaus. The Expressionist Johannes Itten taught a color theory at Bauhaus that is still used to introduce art students to color today. Many Bauhaus instructors – with Johannes Itten as a key example – believed that traditional divisions between the applied arts and fine arts should be erased and, furthermore, that the conventional thinking that led to the first World War needed to be surmounted. Johannes Itten (1888-1967) initiated teaching practices at the Bauhaus with his fundamental notion of the body as a sensory stimulus (Saletnik & Schuldenfrei, 2009) [2].Itten encouraged the students to approach the basic curriculum course from three directions – 1) with their senses, 2) with their intellectual responses and 3) with their synthetic realizations (Itten, 1975; Meggs, 2006).
